Most 6.5-band writing already has decent vocabulary — what caps the score is weak paragraph structure and unclear position statements. Before adding "impressive" words, fix the skeleton: one clear idea per paragraph, explicit topic sentences, and a position that doesn't waver between the introduction and conclusion.
Candidates aiming for 7+ often slow themselves down self-correcting minor grammar errors mid-answer. Examiners weight fluency and coherence heavily — a confident answer with a small error usually scores higher than a hesitant, self-corrected one.
A common 6.5 pattern is running out of time on the last passage after over-investing in the first. Practise with a strict per-passage timer (about 20 minutes each) so accuracy on passage three matches passage one.
Many wrong answers come from a distractor mentioned just before the correct answer, designed to catch listeners who stop paying attention too early. Practise flagging an answer only after the speaker moves on to the next point, not the moment you hear something that sounds right.
Generic practice tests tell you your overall score, not what's capping it. A focused review — writing task 2 argument development, or speaking part 3 abstract reasoning, for example — moves the needle faster than repeating full mock tests without targeted review.
